12 Ways To Christmas

How would your friend know they could proudly give you a gift that was previously used? How would your aunt know what you want most is time together?

We can give differently and, to shift norms, we also need to wish differently.

Given these reasons, these more elaborated reasons, or your own reasons, take the Wishlist Challenge: consider these 12 ways to wish, adopt what works for you and leave the rest!

In the first way to Christmas, I wish for this from thee:

To Purchase Amazon-Free

What do you value most in life?

It probably isn't fast and "free" shipping. Given these reasons, these more elaborated reasons, or your own reasons, try spending Christmas without Amazon this year.

Whether you do a formal wishlist makeover with dreamlist.com or your own brainstorm that sparks conversations with loved ones, let your values shine through - without Amazon, you can make do.

Challenge: #ResistAmazon Christmas - create a NON-Amazon wishlist for things NOT on Amazon

2 Turtle Mugs

Are you looking for mugs with turtles on them? Or perhaps socks that make it look like sharks are eating your legs? Whatever the specific thing, there are plenty of sites besides Amazon to try and they generally cost about the same.

Here are just a few options:

  • Buy directly from sellers you used to buy from through Amazon
  • Done Good is "The Amazon of Social Good" -Forbes
  • WeBuyBlack is a marketplace for black owned businesses
  • For books, check out BookShop and BetterWorldBooks
  • For devices and gadgets, check out this guide
  • Other ideas? Share on social media #WishlistChallenge #ResistAmazon

Challenge: Try out alternatives to Amazon for your online buying and wishing

3 Local Hens

Hens, hats, hammers, hummus...there's a lot we can wish for from local stores, shops, farmers, artisans, and restaurants. Options to consider:

  • Does your area have a farmer's market or artisan's market? Wish for stuff they grow and make
  • Want to get your hair done, a massage, maybe a tattoo?
  • Membership to a gym or museum
  • Gift certificate to your favorite local eatery
  • Find local sellers on Etsy
    • Search item > click All Filters > scroll to Shop location > Custom
  • Want to support a local worker-owned business? Find one nearby in the US.

Challenge: Wish for local goods, services, etc.

4 Crafted Birds

Do you like birds? Art? Bath scrub? Knitted scarves? Home-cooked food? Wish for items your loved ones could make for you.

Challenge: Wish for homemade items

5 Thrift Store Rings

There is a lot of stuff out there. Doodads, knickknacks, whatchamacallits. The world is drowning in it. Rather than requesting one more new thing, let people know you welcome something second hand. You never know what treasures you could receive!

Challenge: Wish for used items

Stretch Challenge: Gift economy networks like Buy Nothing Project facilitate people giving and receiving for free and building community. 7.5 million members in 128 thousand communities and growing! If you haven't yet, join or start a group!

6 Weeks a Stitching

Are you interested in learning to sew? What about learning to make mixed drinks? Maybe a little pottery or cartooning or stand-up? Dance or martial arts? Wish for classes that teach you a skill and your gift could last a lifetime.

For other ideas, check out:

  • Community college continuing education programs
  • Community center newsletters and bulletin boards
  • University student centers that offer community passes
  • Online or in person learning opportunities such as airbnb.com/experiences
  • When in doubt, Google it (or better yet, DuckDuckGo it - like Google search but better data privacy)

Challenge: Wish for something you want to learn

7 Secret Santas

Are you part of a group in which everyone exchanges gifts? Think back. Do you remember what each person gave you last year? Did you want, need, truly appreciate each and every one? If so, great! If not, consider a name exchange instead. In an exchange, people can put energy and love into one intentional gift. You might just get a gift you'll remember years to come! Draw names out of a hat or check out namedrawing.com for a more sophisticated option, and maybe add some fun by making it into a game.

Challenge: Suggest a gift exchange

8 Hands a Helping

Is there a project you've been meaning to do for years? Is your house a disaster? Does your bathroom need painting? Does your car sound like a goblin on helium? Sometimes two hands just aren't enough. Whether from your friend or a paid professional, seize this beautiful moment in time to wish for some help.

Challenge: Wish for help or services

9 Peeps a Puzzling

Remember that one time you and 8 friends spent all day working on that ridiculously hard puzzle? How about the city-wide scavenger hunt your cousin put together? Or when you went to see your favorite band? What about that awesome road trip? What do you want to experience this year? The best gifts don't fit in boxes. Unless you’re a toddler or a cat. Then, the best gift may literally be a box.

Challenge: Wish for experiences

10 Brownies Baking

Imagine a tray of brownies fresh from the oven. Served with peppermint ice cream. Enjoyed with one of your favorite people on Earth. And all you have to do is write it down on your wishlist. Whether homemade, from your favorite restaurant, or store-bought, wish for food or drinks you would gladly savor.

Challenge: Wish for food or drinks... not from Whole Foods, which Amazon owns

11 Meals a Wheeling

Is there an organization that has made a positive difference in your life? What cause are you passionate about? What was the last fundraising or volunteering request you wanted to say yes to but didn't? Meals on Wheels is just one example of countless organizations doing good in our world. What organization speaks to you? In lieu of a gift, ask for a donation to that organization or for your friends to join you in volunteering for an afternoon.

Challenge: Wish for a donation of time or money

12 Dreamers Dreaming

What do you value most? What do you dream of? For yourself? For loved ones? For your community? For the world? From life-long personal goals to societal shifts, no one gets there alone. It's time to talk to each other about our dreams. That's how things get done - together.

Challenge: Dare to share your dreams with others.

Has anything shifted in how you are thinking about Christmas? Did this challenge you to think differently about what you wish for?
